For businesses that offer classes and events, you have the ability to set up staff compensation payable based on classes and/or attendance. The compensation structure can be set up as straight commission, tiered commission by revenue, tiered commission by attendees, or tiered commission by sessions. In this article, we will review how to set up compensation for classes and how each is calculated.
Things to know:
- The ability to configure commission for classes and events on a staff profile is governed by the "Accessing Staff Compensation" access control setting.
- The commission is calculated only for checked-in or paid attendees for a class session.
- The rate can be either a percentage of the class revenue or a fixed dollar amount.
- Straight Commission: Pay staff a straight percentage or flat commission per checked-in or paid attendee in a session.
- Tiered Commission by Revenue: The commission is calculated on the total revenue earned from all checked-in or paid attendees in a session. It can be based on the entire class revenue generated in the period or just the amount above the tier. You can set the base rate that the commission is paid for the first tier and then add as many tiers as you like.
- All Revenue Earned: Applies only one tier, the one that matches the overall revenue. The commission will be calculated as total revenue x tier %.
- Amount Above Earned: Applies an incremental commission for each revenue threshold achieved. The commission will be calculated as revenue minus tier threshold x tier percentage.
- Tiered Commission by Attendees: The commission is calculated based on the number of checked-in or paid attendees in a class session per pay cycle. You can set the base rate that the commission is paid on for the first tier and then add as many tiers as you like.
- Tiered Commission by Sessions: The commission is calculated based on the number of class sessions conducted per pay cycle. You can set the base rate that the commission is paid on for the first tier and then add as many tiers as you like.
- Staff commission for classes with custom discounts is determined by the "Calculate class commission post-discount" setting in Business Setup > Settings:
- If set to YES: Commission is calculated based on the discounted class price (after discounts are applied).
- If set to NO: Commission is calculated based on the original class price (before discounts are applied).
- If a promotion is applied, commission will be calculated according to the post- or pre-discount setting configured in the promotion interface.
- If a membership discount is applied, commission will be calculated according to the post- or pre-discount setting configured in the membership interface.
- If the attendee has a membership where the class is free, the commission can be based on the regular class price or on the internal price set on the membership configuration interface.
- When a ticket is fully refunded, the commission will be removed. If the ticket is only partially refunded, the commission will be adjusted based on the remaining amount.

Class Commission Checkbox
Pay the class commission only if the class revenue is above $
This setting ensures that staff members receive commission on class sessions only if the class revenue they generate exceeds a specified dollar amount ($X). It’s designed to motivate staff to generate sufficient class sales before earning commissions.
- If the staff member’s class revenue is above the set threshold, they will earn commission on those classes.
- If the class revenue is below the threshold, no commission will be paid for the classes.
- Example: Threshold: $500
- Scenario 1: Staff revenue is $600 (above $500)
The commission is active and payable. The commission amount is displayed normally in the report.
Scenario 2: Staff revenue is $200 (below $500)
The commission section for the classes is greyed out in the report, indicating no commission is paid.
- Scenario 1: Staff revenue is $600 (above $500)
